What Is a “Lesion of Concern”?

A lesion of concern is any spot that:

  • Looks different from your other moles or marks
  • Is changing in size, shape, or color
  • Bleeds, crusts, or does not heal
  • Appears new and unusual

Most lesions are benign—but identifying the ones that are not is critical.

Common Lesions We Evaluate

We assess a wide range of skin findings, including:

  • Atypical moles (dysplastic nevi)
  • Changing or irregular pigmented lesions
  • Non-healing growths or sores
  • Scaly or crusted spots
  • Rapidly growing nodules
  • New lesions in adulthood

Each lesion is evaluated individually—because small differences can significantly change management.

Careful Evaluation

We take a focused, detail-oriented approach:

  • Visual examination with trained pattern recognition
  • Dermoscopy to assess structures not visible to the naked eye
  • Comparison with surrounding lesions

The goal is to determine—quickly and accurately—whether further action is needed.

Biopsy When Indicated

If a lesion requires confirmation, we perform a biopsy using the most appropriate technique:

  • Shave biopsy
  • Punch biopsy
  • Excisional biopsy

This is done efficiently, often during the same visit, to avoid delays.

Clear Next Steps

After evaluation or biopsy, you will leave with:

  • A clear understanding of the concern
  • Defined follow-up or treatment plan
  • No unnecessary waiting to decide what comes next
